I Am The Light Of The World (John 8)

It's helpful to break down John 8:12-18 and 25-30 to understand the interactions and theological points Jesus is making.

John 8:12-18: Jesus, the Light of the World

  • "I am the light of the world":

    • What does this declaration reveal about Jesus?

    • How does the imagery of "light" function in John's Gospel? What does it symbolize?

    • How does Jesus's claim contrast with the spiritual "darkness" that John often speaks of?

  • The Pharisees' Challenge:

    • Why do the Pharisees challenge Jesus's testimony? What are their legalistic objections?

    • How does Jesus respond to their challenge regarding his witness?

John 8:25-30: Revealing His Identity

  • "Who are you?":

    • Why do the Jews repeatedly question Jesus's identity?

    • How does Jesus's response in verse 25, "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning," indicate his consistency?

  • Speaking the Truth:

    • What does Jesus mean when he says he speaks what he has heard from the Father?

    • How does this reinforce his claim to be sent by God?

  • "When you have lifted up the Son of Man":

    • What is Jesus foreshadowing when he speaks of being "lifted up"?

    • What does Jesus say that they will then know?

  • Belief and Understanding:

    • Why do some of the Jews believe in Jesus after hearing these words?

    • What is the importance of "knowing" the father, in relation to knowing Jesus?

Application and Reflection:

  1. How does Jesus's claim to be the "light of the world" impact your daily life?

  2. In what ways do you see "light" and "darkness" at work in the world today?

  3. How does understanding Jesus's relationship with the Father strengthen your faith?

  4. How does the concept of Jesus being "lifted up" change your understanding of the cross?
